(Web Desk) – The largest container ship in the history of Pakistan has docked at Karachi port.

The colossal vessel, MSC ANNA, arrived at the South Asia Pakistan Terminal (SAPT) on Wednesday, making a significant mark in the country’s shipping and logistics landscape.

The MSC ANNA measures an impressive 400 metres in length and has a capacity of 19,368 TEUs (Twenty-foot Equivalent Units).

This surpasses the previous record set on May 19, 2020, by the Hong Kong Express, which was 366.50 metres long and had a capacity of 14,000 TEUs.

A special ceremony to welcome the ship will be held on Thursday (today) at Karachi Port, to be attended by port officials and high-ranking government figures.

The spokesperson for Karachi Port Trust (KPT) confirmed that the MSC ANNA was berthed at the private SAPT terminal under the supervision of KPT General Manager Operations Rear Admiral Rizwan Ahmed.

The ship brought in 19,000 containers, and the offloading process will commence shortly after the necessary formalities are completed.

CS Kim, Head of the Business Unit at Hutchison Ports Pakistan, expressed his pride in handling the largest container ship in Pakistan’s history.

He emphasised that this event reflects Hutchison Ports Pakistan’s commitment to advancing the country’s maritime industry.

Kim highlighted their experience in managing large vessels, noting that they previously handled a 366-meter ship with 14,000 TEUs and now successfully managed the 400-meter MSC ANNA.

“This achievement demonstrates our capability to efficiently handle large container ships, and we will continue to showcase our proficiency in the future,” Kim stated.

The arrival of such large vessels is expected to reduce shipping costs, enhance port activities, and boost government revenue.

The increased traffic of large ships at Karachi Port underscores Pakistan’s growing importance in global trade and highlights the terminal’s crucial role in the country’s economic development.
